2018 World Energy Trilemma Index

When it comes to energy, all countries face the same fundamental challenge: how to balance the trade-offs to ensure secure, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy.

These three challenges are the core dimensions of the “energy trilemma”, according to the World Energy Council.

Robust energy systems are secure and reliable, affordable and accessible and environmentally sustainable, with a managed balance between the three dimensions. But maintaining this balance in the context of today’s rapid transition to decentralized, decarbonized, and digitized systems is challenging: there are risks of trade-offs between equally critical priorities.

The 2018 World Energy Trilemma Index, developed by Marsh & McLennan Companies’ Global Risk Center, Oliver Wyman, and the World Energy Council, ranks 125 countries on the performance of their national energy systems, and their ability to balance the dimensions of the Energy Trilemma. This year’s Index shows that many countries are managing the balance successfully, with eight nations achieving a top AAA balance score. Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden top the overall rankings.

Explore the interactive Index tool to see your country’s energy profile and regional overviews as well as maps highlighting energy performance by each dimension.
