A Day in the Life of a Client Executive

The Job
As a client executive in Marsh’s surety practice I assess current deals and try to further any potential deals or bonds. I speak to a whole host of clients each day to assess their needs, and also speak regularly with underwriters to gauge their thoughts and negotiate terms on any potential deals. As surety is a niche business area, I spend much time dealing with other teams within Marsh to promote our product. I often have to think creatively about how our surety solutions can be applied in helping our clients and prospects.
The Start
I usually start my day by reading through emails: some cases can be quite urgent and need a quick solution or response. I then call the necessary clients and underwriters for updates.

The Best Bit
The negotiating aspect of the role is always fun, seeing what deals you can get and on what terms. As surety is a niche area, it has multiple commercial areas that can be explored for the use of our product. Investigating and trying to further opportunities in these areas is always interesting. I am also partial to accept the occasional entertainment invite. My golf has certainly improved since starting my career with Marsh.
The Skills
My degree in Business Marketing and Management has definitely proved useful for me in my role. I regularly analyse different aspects of clients’ business and accounts, this being something taught as part of my university course. I also took part in group projects throughout my degree course, usually business consultancies. This helped with my ability to work with others towards a common goal.

The Challenges
One of the most challenging experiences I’ve had was with a client who had such a bad trading period that the underwriters involved with the account were not willing to issue further bonds for them. Without bonds in place, the client would be unable to trade or operate and would have to shut down. Pressure was then extremely high to create a solution. We managed to create an acceptable solution for which the client was hugely grateful. The experience taught me never to be afraid of thinking outside of the box.
The Team
My team is very small with only three members in the London office, so there is a personal dynamic which creates a great atmosphere to work in. I have constant communication with my manager and team leader, so can deal with any issues quickly and efficiently. My team, along with all the Marsh colleagues I have dealt with, are very approachable and always keen to hear good ideas, contributing to an innovative and enjoyable working environment. I would always recommend a career at Marsh to any graduate!
