The private sector did not sit idly by and, as soon as the destructive hurricane Maria passed, it sought the welfare of its employees, providing them with water and power generators, access to mental health services and compensation for disasters, among other benefits.
This was evidenced in the Survey to Employeers on Benefits to Employees after Catastrophic Event, prepared by Marsh Saldaña during the month of December. Marsh sent the questionnaire to 58 companies on the island from all industrial sectors, and of those, 31 answered all the questions of the survey, said Luis Alicea, vice president of Vetas de Marsh.
45% are capital companies; native or cuta sede is in Puerto Rico, while 55% are multinationals with a presence here. 19% are in the health industry, 16% in manufacturing, 13% in commerce, 13% in education, 13% in food consumption, 10% in finance / insurance and 16% in other lines.
39% have between 101 and 500 employees; 6% have less than 50; 19% between 51 and 100; 13% from 501 to 1,000 'and 23% more than 1,000 workers.
Labor flexibility was the most benefit granted by employers (90%). These allowed the staff to work remotely, as well as accommodate the work schedule at convenient times. Drinking water was the second most prevalent benefit (90%), at times when the precious liquid was scarce and it was difficult to obtain it in stores. Meanwhile, access to mental health services was the third most offered (70%), according to the survey, as the employers brought mental health professionals to the companies to attend the staff there.
