The Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in 2011, but some of its regulations are only now becoming enforceable. The FSMA amended the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and instructed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement rules to ensure that US food products are safe. And food safety is a public health imperative: 48 million Americans suffer foodborne illnesses each year, according to the FDA.
