MMC Cyber Risks Handbook 2018

In 2017, a new and important turning point was reached in the fight to manage cyber risk.

Three characteristics mark this new phase. First, global cybercrime has reached such a high level of sophistication that it represents a mature, albeit illicit, global business sector in itself.

Second, with the almost ubiquitous technologies that now connect the physical and digital worlds to an unprecedented degree, there is new potential for individual cyber attacks to devastate critical business and operational processes.

The third characteristic that takes shape today is the growing importance of institutions -governments, regulatory authorities, law enforcement agencies, the insurance industry and others- as a critical element to counteract the global cyber threat. Cyber risks can only be effectively addressed if there is a common understanding of their importance and a greater interconnected nature.

In this context, the 2018 edition of the Cyber Risk Manual of MMC provides information on the changing environment of the cyber threat, emerging global policy trends and best practices on the road to cybernetic resistance. The manual contains articles by business leaders from Marsh & McLennan Companies and our experts and notable contributors. We hope that this manual will help you better understand what is needed to achieve cybernetic resilience in the face of this important and persistent threat.
